Welcome to THE OL' FACTORY CAFE.
"Doing to Sand City what we did to Monterey."

Meanwhile, we're happy to announce that The OL' FACTORY just won several awards in the
MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY'S annual "BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY" poll.

We were just voted...
BEST RESTAURANT in SAND CITY (don't laugh, there are others)
BEST SELECTION of BEERS on TAP
BEST PLACE FOR INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION
BEST PLACE to DISCUSS POLITICS

                     Stone Houses to Sand Castles.

All of this is continuing a tradition we started back at a little Stone House in Monterey.
As The Weekly pointed out in their current "Best Of" issue, the way to "hatch a hip joint" is exactly what we did back in 1993 when we envisioned, designed, and opened the best coffee house on the Central Coast.

Situated in the historic Herald Building, we purchased exotic, fair trade, organic beans before anyone else, roasted them on site, and surrounded the whole affair with art shows, music acts, weekly open mics, promoting conversation centered on poetry, politics and foreign policy.  We wanted to create a coffee house in the very best tradition of the word.  A community gathering spot that incorporated local affairs with great product.  Our focus and dedication to perfection paid off as we were voted best coffee beans, best espresso drinks, and best coffee house... 10 years in a row.

And not only did we revitalize a boarded up old stone building at the corner of Washington and Pearl, we revitalized the whole corner.  Everything you see there now, including the plaza out front... well, we like to think we had something to do with all of it.

And we're glad the idea stuck.

If we can turn a neglected pile of stones into a successful operation like that, just think what we can do in a city made of sand.
